It’s World Suicide Prevention Day, so let’s take a moment to think, talk, and remember that we all need to keep going.
Hearts breathe to guitar strings at night,
gathered around red plastic, boxing gloves, fruit punches
in a college dorm so tight

Eyes meet, hands reach for the next spiral down the drain,
warmth rises, numb smiles, the pain underneath going insane —
it runs, it lies, it makes you want to hide
behind the elaborate, under the skin
fighting to survive with hope by your side

Staying here, staring at a wall —
Death a sin?

Lying awake, gasping for tears —
Afraid.
Fixing before no one sees, you didn’t let us know
But I wish I stayed.
You were falling,
sinking so low,
holding onto tomorrow.

It’s pitch darkness, the sun & sand a distant road away,
where we flew our kites so high
never did we think we would have to say goodbye.

Hearts breathe to candles at night,
gathered around white wax, brothers, photographs
in a vigil so bright

Eyes tear, hands reach for each other where the love comes to a circle,
warmth rushes, numb smiles, the pain,
joy, sadness, anger, all unexpected inside —
it comes, it goes, it makes us feel alone.

Behind our memory, under the words —
We fight to survive with hope by our side.
Staying here, soundly beating,
We miss you too.
Our hearts breathe in loving memory of you.
